NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee man on death row who was forced to act as his own lawyer is seeking a new trial, claiming multiple violations of his constitutional rights.
Howard Willis was sentenced to death in 2010 for the murders of teenage newlyweds, 17-year-old Adam Chrismer and 16-year-old Samantha Leming Chrismer, both of Chickamauga, Georgia. The boy’s head and hands were found by fishermen in Boone Lake in northeastern Tennessee in October 2002. An elderly Vancouver lawyer has been disbarred by the Law Society of BC and ordered to pay more than $10,000 for misconduct during more than a dozen real estate transactions that could have facilitated money laundering.
A hearing panel of the Law Society Tribunal found that Lubomir Ihor Huculak “failed to make reasonable inquiries of his clients in the face of overwhelming, objectively suspicious circumstances,” according to a news release issued by the law society Wednesday.
The statement notes that Huculak has appealed the decision, and his disbarment may be stayed as a result.

Of the total respondents, the ban received overwhelming support, with 95% in favor of a prospective ban.
