On 24 November 2022, the Australian Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP announced the Attorney-General’s Department’s intention to release an issues paper for public consultation, as the first stage of a review into Australia’s current copyright enforcement regime. The broad aim of the review is to understand:
Current and emerging copyright enforcement priorities and challenges;
Whether Australia’s copyright enforcement regime remains relevant, effective and proportionate; and
Whether existing enforcement mechanisms need to be strengthened, and if so, how can this be done without imposing unreasonable administrative or economic burdens.
The Copyright Enforcement Review Issues Paper (“Issues Paper“), was subsequently…
Lawsuit says Shein has grown rich by repeated copyright infringements in a ‘continuous pattern of racketeering’.
China’s fast-fashion retailer Shein is facing a lawsuit that claims the clothing maker’s copyright infringement is so aggressive that it amounts to racketeering.
The filing this week, by three fashion designers in a United States court, claims that Shein is in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, better known as RICO, a law originally crafted to prosecute organized crime.
“Shein has grown rich by committing individual infringements over and over again, as part of a long and continuous pattern of racketeering,…
The United States Department of Labor has reached an agreement with a food company after two children were discovered operating meat-processing equipment, in violation of federal law.
The agreement, announced on Friday, is the latest in the department’s crackdown on child labor violations, which have surged in recent years, as several states move to loosen workplace protections for youths.
“The Department of Labor and the Biden-Harris administration see child labor as a scourge in this country and will not tolerate violations of child labor laws,” Solicitor of Labor Seema Nanda said in Friday’s press release, underscoring President Joe Biden and…
MEXICO CITY –
Mexico’s president called on US citizens Monday not to vote for Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis because of his state’s enactment of a tough immigration bill.
The comments about the Florida law, which the Mexican government has said is likely to cause discrimination against migrants, marks President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s second recent break with Mexico’s tradition of non-intervention in the politics of other countries. In March, he called Peru’s government racist and illegitimate.
“We could not remain silent,” Lopez Obrador said of the Florida law at news conference Monday.
Under the Florida law…

Aside from its recently passed budget legislation, the Progressive Conservative government is also set to give First Nations communities more power to enforce laws and collect unpaid fines.
Other bills that have passed in recent days or are about to pass include one that would make it easier for victims of sue people who share intimate images without consent.
Several bills from opposition parties are also set to be approved in…
The Liberals have put forward legislation that aims to make good on their pledge to tighten passenger rights rules after a year marked by travel chaos and a backlog of ballooning complaints.
Tabled in the House of Commons as part of a broader budget bill Thursday, the new provisions ratchet up penalties on airlines, shore up the complaint process and target luggage and flight disruption loopholes that have allowed airlines to avoid compensating customers.
The proposed $250,000 maximum fine for airline violations — a tenfold increase over the existing regulations — encourages compliance, said Sylvie De Bellefeuille, a lawyer with…
Last week, Donald Trump surrendered to authorities and was arraigned in a Manhattan courtroom on thirty-four felony stem charges from hush-money payments made during the 2016 Presidential campaign. (The money went to the adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had an affair with Trump.) In an indictment that was unsealed after the hearing, Trump is accused of falsifying business records; an accompanying statement of facts alleges that the former President “violated elections laws and made and caused false entries in the business records of various entities in New York.”
A number of legal commentators across the political spectrum…
