MEXICO CITY –
Mexico’s president called on US citizens Monday not to vote for Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis because of his state’s enactment of a tough immigration bill.
The comments about the Florida law, which the Mexican government has said is likely to cause discrimination against migrants, marks President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s second recent break with Mexico’s tradition of non-intervention in the politics of other countries. In March, he called Peru’s government racist and illegitimate.
“We could not remain silent,” Lopez Obrador said of the Florida law at news conference Monday.

BEIJING — The US recommended Americans consider traveling to China because of arbitrary law enforcement and exit bans and the risk of wrongful detentions.
No specific cases were cited, but the advisory came after a 78-year-old US citizen was sentenced to life in prison on spying charges in May.
It also followed the passage last week of a sweeping Foreign Relations Law that threatened countermeasures against those seen as harming China’s interests.
China has also recently passed a broadly written counterespionage law that has sent a chill through the foreign business community, with offices being raided, as well as a…
The SPCA is calling on the province to pass a law protecting the health and welfare of farm animals.
The industry currently regulates itself with codes of practice, but the group says that’s not good enough.
A video produced by the Montreal SPCA calls on the government to include farm animals in the province’s Animal Welfare and Safety Act.
“A lot of people believe that animals on farms are actually protected by animal welfare laws that are in existence right now, and that’s not the case. Those laws specifically exclude animals that are on farms,” said Anthony Johnson, the Montreal…
Twenty years ago, Fermi Wong embarked on her first ever protest against the government. Little did she expect she was to be joined by at least half a million other demonstrators.
In July 2003, Hong Kong people took to the streets to fight the imminent passage of security legislation linked to Article 23, part of the territory’s mini-constitution known as the Basic Law. They feared the law would snuff out the civil liberties they enjoyed as residents of the former British colony that had reverted to Chinese sovereignty six years before.

The Canadian Parliament has passed a law that will require technology companies to pay domestic news outlets for linking to their articles, prompting the owner of Facebook and Instagram to say that it would pull news articles from both platforms in the country.
The law, passed on Thursday, is the latest salvo in a push by governments around the world to force big companies like Google and Facebook to pay for news that they share on their platforms — a campaign that the companies have resisted at virtually every turn.
With some caveats, the new Canadian law would force search…

Two women connected with separate but similar dog attacks on two different southern Ontario trails concur that getting justice through municipal authorities has been a “nightmare.”
Tamara Dufour and Leanne Schmidt are convinced two attacks, which come almost a year apart, involve the same dog and owner, who may have circumvented authorities after the animals were designated as “dangerous.”
“My adrenaline is surging right now after recounting all of this,” said Schmidt, relaying how his son Kai was attacked by one of two German Shepherds on the rail trail between Paris and Glen Morris in May.
“It should have been…
